This worried Sam because she did not her friend having a kid and being stuck in Hopeweel the rest of her life. This was solved when Dawn's boyfriend Kevin took the news very well and told her he wanted to marry her and move to Florida. This resulted in Sam feeling alot better since she knew her friend would have a good life.
Sam's conflict with Emmet not wanting to ever leave Hopewell also was resolved. She finally talked Emmet into going to Washington D.C to visit the Vietnam memorial wall. Sam was very excited when Emmet decided to go because she had worried about him being stuck in Hopewell for the rest of his life. Sam did not want to see him waste his life away and dwell on the war.

This book has alot to do with America. It is about the time period were America went through a very tough time. We lost thousands of soldiers and the soldiers that lived had a rough time ahead of them. They had to deal with diseases and missing arms and legs die to booby traps. Sam's cousin had to deal with all of his memories of seeing his buddies being blown up right in front of him.
